Introducing Characters in Opening Sequences

I have noticed that characters are frequently introduced in opening sequences and audiences are given important information about those characters which will be useful for the audience later in the film. I have decided to look at 3 opening scenes and analyse in more detail how the characters are introduced.

'Divergent' is a film in the genre of Action and adventure:

  • Main Protagonist voice over explaining her life, this gives background and helps position the audience with the character
  • The voice over says 'my faction' and a little girl out of place is shown, we can connect that this is the main character (either now or when she was younger)
  • As the voice over says 'my father' a man is shown
  • The audience can see another character who is portrayed as the leader
As my opening sequence is going to be a Rom-Com,  I am going to look into a comedy and a romantic film. I decided to look at both instead of just a rom-com so I can get more ideas of how characters in each opening sequence are introduced.

'Legally Blonde' is a film in the genre of comedy:

  • Main character is shown getting ready
  • We can tell she takes care in her appearance as her hair/nails are perfect
  • Other characters are shown in an American sorority
  • Main characters name is 'Elle', we can see a letter going around the other characters for her
  • The audience can see from the opening that the main character is very popular as she was homecoming queen
  • The audience can see her personality and view it as very feminine as a lot of her objects are pink
  • The audience sees the main character at the end of the clip receiving the letter which travelled around the sorority for her - this shows she has other people do things for her, perceives her as important and powerful
'Dear John' is a film in the genre of a romantic drama:

  • A main protagonist voice over - this reveals background to the audience, and positions the audience with the character
  • A main character is shown as strong (army)
  • The audience sees a main character hurt and we sympathise with his story
  • The audience now sees the main characters life before he got shot in the army
  • Other characters are shown
