Enigma/Mystery Analysis

Opening sequences usually create enigma/mystery this is because audience members see parts of action and wonder what will happen next. I have decided to research how different opening sequences have created this to help me understand how I can also create it.

'Get Out' is a film in the genre of Horror:

  • Enigma is created within the first second of the opening sequence because the street are very dark, we can see a silhouette of the character which creates a sense of mystery as to who he is
  • Leading up to events there are noises of animals and bugs which adds to the creepy tone of the scene
  • There are no other cars on the street except one, the audience can tell something bad is about to happen.
  • Enigma is created when there is a long shot of the car with the door open as it is foreshadowing that the driver is out, the car is also playing diegetic music which is very loud and contrapuntal as it is upbeat and jazz-like when the driver kills the man
  • Mystery is also created when the driver puts the dead man into his car and just drives off as the audience doesn't know who either characters are, this makes the audience want to understand what happens
'The Maze Runner' is a film in the genre of Action:

  • Enigma is created by the sound of jails doors or heavy doors opening with a black screen
  • Enigma and misery is shown in this opening sequence because is it a dark lift-like room and the character seems confused which disorientates the audience
  • A black screen is accompanied by the sound of heavy breathing, it is unusual to have a black screen in the middle of an opening scene which further disorientates the audience
  • Enigma is created when the protagonist is being surrounded in a circle and a high frequency sound is heard
  • The non-diegetic high frequency sound gets louder as the protagonist runs
  • Non-diegetic fast paced music is then played which creates more enigma
